What is noise monitoring?
A facility that generates a lot of noise can be harmful to the workers within a confined space. At Emilcott, we are often called in to monitor this noise to make sure it doesn’t exceed certain thresholds that could be harmful to workers. We monitor both personal and area noise dosimetry. We also use a sound level meter that measures sound levels of the areas in which people work. We’ll even attach these meters, called dosimeters, to individual employees as they walk around and do their day-to-day activities. This allows us to see exactly how much noise they exposed to.
Why is it important to measure noise?
Over time, exposure to loud noises can have irreversible damage to ones hearing. There are short term and long term affects when it comes to excess noise exposure.
How long before effects take place?
Noise is interesting. For example, when we monitor air, and yo for chemical exposure, there are are standard limits and amounts of time that people can safely be exposed. u’re exposed to a chemical for 8 hours, you’re allowed to be exposed to this chemical for a certain amount of time throughout the day. However, compared to noise, if you hear something really loud in one second, then that impact noise can have an immediate affect on your hearing. It doesn’t necessarily have to be over a certain period of time.
Does this effect just workers or those in the area?
We do noise monitoring mainly for the workers within the confined space of the facility. Noise travels, obviously, but there is a drastic difference between a loud noise within the building, compared to when you’re across the street.
Does every site need noise monitoring or all you called in?
If it’s a concern, then Emilcott is called in. Once inside, most of the time, I can tell they need some sort of monitoring.
Are some facilities noisier than others?
Absolutely. Manufacturing is the loudest. I’m not on the constructions side, however, with manufacturing there’s a ton of machinery. The workers tend to make a fraction of the noise compared to the heavy machinery.
